New Foundland is an island the size of a third of Sweden with half a million inhabitants. Up north the forests spread for miles and miles and the icebergs frame the coastline. The Viking Leif Eriksson came here in 1000 A D and the remains of his habitat can be found in the far north of the island. Most probably his followers continued south and "discovered" the North American mainland.

A little more than 500 years ago the English arrived on the island and founded what is St Johns today, close to the easternmost peninsula on the Atlantic coast. The oldest street in Northern America can be found here as well as the only university on the island and about 100.000 of the islands inhabitants. The city is picturesquely situated around a harbour basin, which can only be accessed through a small passage from the Atlantic.
